Gateway to the Arts has been offering professional development opportunities to educators, artists, teaching artists and arts organizations in western Pennsylvania for over 15 years. Teachers who participate in Gateway to the Arts' Institutes receive Intermediate Unit in-service hours and Act 48 credits. To date, teachers from 86 school districts have participated in these programs.

This hands-on workshop will demonstrate techniques for facilitating interactive storytelling to promote emergent literacy skills and foster development in other learning domains. Teaching artist Christina Farrell will help participants find the “drama” in a picture book and discover strategies for adapting children’s literature to facilitate child-directed storytelling experiences.

| Mental Health Diagnosis in Children: Symptoms and Intervention Approaches for the Learning Environment |

The first part of this presentation provides a brief overview of “internalizing” and “externalizing” mental health disorders including symptoms related to specific diagnosis and tips for working with students with those diagnoses. The second half of the presentation is specific to the diagnoses on the Autism Spectrum and will review characteristics of learners with autism and tips for successful teaching approaches.

Learn how a work of art can become a "text" to inspire, inform and integrate the arts into the
curriculum. Summer professional development for educators is followed by a live performance and/or
field trip and artist workshops in classrooms the following school year (a team of at least three
teachers per school is required to qualify for in-school services). 30 Act 48 hours are available through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.
For grade level teachers and arts specialists, K-12.

| Integrating the Arts into Early Childhood Curriculum Institute |

Two days of professional development workshops for teachers and artists will be conducted by master teaching artists from the Vienna, VA -based Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts (http://www.wolf-trap.org/institute/). Teaching artists will model movement, music, drama and puppetry activities. There will also be a workshop on the topic of documentation. During these creative, nurturing, hands-on sessions, teachers will learn innovative arts-based teaching strategies and new techniques to help with classroom management, daily routines and transitions. Participating teachers may qualify for a follow-up artist residency in their classroom with the objective of teacher mastery of arts-based teaching strategies.
The Wolf Trap Institute is a national leader in pre-K arts integration.

Enjoy an evening with fellow teaching artists and instructors at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts deepening your knowledge of Aesthetics and its role in your children’s and adults’ classes, workshops, and residency projects. Through this fun, hands-on workshop we will explore specific techniques that inspire thoughtful art-making by looking deeply at works of art.
Pot luck dinner, munchies, and beverages to follow.
Cheryl Capezzuti is a visual artist and puppetmaker with a fifteen-year relationship with PCA. She has taught in the school, exhibited in the gallery, and currently works as an Artist-in-Residence and serves on the board of PF/PCA. She has an M. Ed. in Art Education from Penn State, is a Master Teaching Artist in Gateway to the Arts’ Aesthetic Education program, and teaches Visual Arts in the School of Education at Duquesne University.
For Artists: TAie (Teaching Artist idea exchange) is a series of informal gatherings
held throughout the year for artists working in school, community and museum settings. The purpose of these get-togethers is to provide a forum for networking,

Gateway to the Arts' staff and teaching
artists are available to conduct full or half-day in-service workshops. Each workshop
is tailored to meet the objectives of the school and/or school district. Workshops generally focus on integrating the arts into the curriculum and may
include hands-on activities. In-services are also available for specialists seeking professional development in the use of specific media or topics such as the
creation of murals, installation art, song-writing, film/video, etc.
