Walk-in Comics: Bullying...Who would you be?

Artist: Wendy Osher

17 Wendy OsherStudents create life-size cartoon boxes with voice bubbles from recycled materials to generate insight and reflection on familiar bullying encounters. Working with classroom teachers to develop dialogue scenarios, students write scripts illustrating ways of coping with various bullying situations. Scaled to the average height of the students in the school (potential math unit), hallways provide a backdrop for walk-in cartoons in which students assume various roles in the cartoon scripts. Photos of students inside this interactive installation provide opportunities for written reflections on the motivations for each role. Reflections will be posted as part of the installation. Adaptable to a variety of situations.

Properties of Metal: Reflections of Myself

Artist: Jan Loney

14 Jan LoneyJan Loney is a metal artist who believes that art can be a strong connection to other areas of learning. In her Properties of Metal: Reflections of Myself workshops, children's natural artistic abilities and curiosity serve as a starting point for creative residency projects that explore the properties of metal as well as artistic choices and processes. The result is a finished product that is meaningful to the students because it is highly personal. Past residency projects have included personal treasure boxes, sculptures tied to curricular themes and concepts, mobiles, three-dimensional self-portraits and items of personal jewelry.
