Focusing on some of your favorite books, percussionist Jeff Berman will guide children in exploring the similarities between the rhythm in language and the rhythm in music. Students will discover the enjoyment of strengthening their literacy skills through the use of sounds, movement, classroom literature and active listening. Jeff is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who has performed internationally. He has a BS in Music from the City University of New York.
Young children will "meet" the people who work in their neighborhoods in Bears About Town with veteran actor/educator Barbara Russell. Through guided role play and inventive use of props, Barbara helps children explore the world of work in this fun and inventive residency. Barbara is a professional actor and a former elementary school teacher who also conducts workshops that model how teachers can use drama as a teaching tool.
Jennie will use the children’s book Cassie's Word Quilt by Faith Ringgold as the basis for exploration of textures, colors and patterns. Children will go on a "letter picnic" to reinforce the alphabet and simple spelling. They gain confidence working with new materials and making color choices while they create a quilt like Cassie's! Jennie is a painter, printmaker and fiber artist who loves to work with color. She has worked for the Carnegie Museum of Art children’s program. Jennie holds a BA in Studio Art from Kent State University and an MA in Archival, Museum and Editing Studies from Duquesne University.
In this 4-workshop residency, Laurie will lead children in simple movement patterns that influence neuromuscular and brain development. Activities focused on familiar nursery rhymes will help children express ideas and communicate in appropriate ways through movement and language. The Dr. Seuss book My Many Colored Days will help us talk about feelings and reinforce literacy skills.
In this 4-week residency, Staycee will guide students through a series of developmentally appropriate activities designed to reinforce motor coordination, introduce various ways of moving and increase and expand communication and math skills. This program will explore focus on the popular counting book Over in the Grasslands. Staycee Pearl is a choreographer/dancer and visual artist who creates movement for many local and regional theater and dance companies. She has a Studio Arts degree at the University of Pittsburgh.
