Announcing the Family Performance Series

E-mail Print

Monday, May 17, 2010 On Saturday, June 19, at 3 pm Gateway to the Arts will launch its first ever Family Performance Series at the tent in Schenley Plaza in Oakland with a showcase by performing artists Delta Blue.

The newest ensemble to be added to our roster, Delta Blue invites children and parents to dance the cakewalk, tap, sing and twist along with them, as they perform classic tunes that highlight the history of African-American music and dance. The set is the same performance program that is touring to schools.

Delta_BlueThis event is just the first of three performances set to occur in the coming year. The Family Performance Series is made possible with financial support from the BNY Mellon Audience Development Fund. The $4500 grant was awarded to help Gateway launch family outreach programs that educate and engage parents in quality arts learning for their children.

Gateway to the Arts believes in engaging children through active participation in the arts, wherever learning takes place. We know that learning in, with and through the arts excites children about learning and allows for leadership and success that many do not find in other areas. Raising awareness of Gateway’s work and its core beliefs among the parent audience will help us fulfill our mission and allow more children in western PA to achieve their potential, find their passion, and develop the skills that will serve them well in the 21st century workforce.  Additionally, by exposing parents to the value of the arts-in-education, we can enable them to become stronger advocates for their children.

The second and third family performances are yet to be determined, but will most likely occur in October and February/March.

Space is limited for the event with Delta Blue on June 19 in Schenley Plaza, so we are encouraging families to pre-register with a donation, for guaranteed seats. There is a suggestion donation of $7.95 per person in advance or $10 per person the day of the show.  Income from the event will be used to off-set additional costs for the series.
