As part of the new Arts to the Core residency program, Gateway teaching artist Paul Kruse is spending five weeks teaching a fourth-grader class at Franklin Elementary School how to make a short animation film.

Thanks to a grant by the Pennsylvaina Council on the Arts, Gateway musician Jeff Berman completed a 60-day residency with fifth- and sixth-grade students at Moss Side Middle School.

Are you excited about what a teaching artist could do to activate learning in your classroom or teach you and your students a new art form or skill? Gateway can partially match your funds through our Pennsylvania Council on the Arts’ Artists-in-Residency grant!

Here’s what to do:

  1. Take a look at the artist residency options on our website for inspiration about what can happen in your school or community.
  2. Review  the “ Guidelines and Procedures ” and “ Evaluation Documentation and Assessment Agreement ” to better understand some of the parameters of the program.
  3. Complete and submit the “ Artist Residency Request Form ” below.

Exceeded expectations. Found inspiration. Demonstrated creative self-expression & community pride. Collaborated well with peers.

— This would be a strong report for any teen project, but is it what you would think of as the results of “court-ordered community service?” Even for idealists among us, it’s probably not the first thought that comes to mind. Now, contrast that thought with what we hear from the cynics, the detractors who clamor to strip funding from social service and arts organizations.

The actions from a diverse group of teens have once again proved them wrong.

Through a partnership with Family Support of Allegheny County and with grants from Target and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Gateway artist Tina Williams Brewer completed a five-week residency with children at the Lincoln Park Family Center.
