Teach Me!
From discovering spatial awareness or exploring aesthetics to gaining problem-solving skills or cooperative ones, Gateway to the Arts Teach Me! programs provide imaginative, engaging, sequential learning experiences for young children and their teachers. Students express themselves creatively and master basic academic and life skills in fun, developmentally appropriate ways though a series of four arts workshops led by Gateway's professional teaching artists. Choose from visual arts, dance, music, dramatic play or puppetry.
These mini-residencies provide professional development opportunities for teachers and can be customized to accomodate your center and the needs of your staff. Limited to 20 students, matching funds for the workshops may be available through our funding partners. The importance of early childhood education is more than just a hot topic, it is development that comes alive though the arts and is measurable in both the enthusiasm and the progress of our littlest learners. Teach Me! mini-residencies are $350 each for locations within Allegheny County. Call for pricing for locations outside of Allegheny County. Jennie will use the children’s book Cassie's Word Quilt by Faith Ringgold as the basis for exploration of textures, colors and patterns. Children will go on a "letter picnic" to reinforce the alphabet and simple spelling. They gain confidence working with new materials and making color choices while they create a quilt like Cassie's! Jennie is a painter, printmaker and fiber artist who loves to work with color. She has worked for the Carnegie Museum of Art children’s program. Jennie holds a BA in Studio Art from Kent State University and an MA in Archival, Museum and Editing Studies from Duquesne University.
This residency is an early childhood exploration of aesthetics and the visual arts. Using animal-based themes and favorite children's books, students will view, discuss, and make their own art. An animal-based theme will be used, inspired by Eric Carle's book From Head to Toe. Rikki has a BA in Art History and Film Studies, and an MS in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. She teaches gallery and studio programs at the Carnegie Museum of Art.
Christina will model uses of imaginative movement and sound exploration to strengthen early literacy skills. Her workshops focus on well-loved folk tales and musical favorites that include animal characters. Christina is the founding director of Opera Ignite! and a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University.
Young children will "meet" the people who work in their neighborhoods in Bears About Town with veteran actor/educator Barbara Russell. Through guided role play and inventive use of props, Barbara helps children explore the world of work in this fun and inventive residency. Barbara is a professional actor and a former elementary school teacher who also conducts workshops that model how teachers can use drama as a teaching tool.
Come join the excitement as we explore movement with silly rhymes and songs and discover our sense of adventure while reading We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, and other brilliant bear books! This story time sequence builds phonemic awareness, story retelling and prediction skills—and through dramatic play and music, encourages students to step into the stories and explore a bear’s world. Your guide, Rebecca Covert, is a singer, storyteller and actress in Pittsburgh who holds an MS in elementary education from Duquesne University.
