Arts in Education Partnership

The Gateway Arts in Education Partnership forges dynamic collaborations between the educational and arts communities to bring the arts and arts-centered learning to students, educators and administrators. The Arts in Education Partnership is based upon the renowned Lincoln Center Institute model of arts integration in which a work of visual or performing art becomes a text for arts-based learning in many areas of the curriculum.
 
The Partnership begins with the Institute, a three-day summer professional development course for educators held in Pittsburgh (dates and location varies). This training is followed by a school-year unit of study that includes an in-school performance or field trip and a four-day artist residency in the classroom. 

The Partnership package includes

• Attendance for 3-5 teachers, administrators and/or arts specialists at the professional development workshops.   
• 21 Act 48 hours for teachers who complete requirements.
• Works of visual or performing art that will serve as the focus for a unit of study in the classroom.
• Artist residency component—teaching artists plan with educators to co-teach workshops before and after the artistic experience with each educator, engaging the students in hands-on activities and extending the activities into other areas of the curriculum.

The Balkan Babes

2011-2012 Arts in Education Partnership

The Balkan Babes present songs from the vibrant music and culture of Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, and Croatia with fun sing-a longs and a couple of simple Balkan folk dances. Lively accordion accompaniment or quiet a capella verses explore the Balkan culture along with beautiful costumes from each country. A Pittsburgh-based group for 20 years with three CDs to their credit, the Balkan Babes are included in the Rivers of Steel Heritage Foundation’s compilation CD representing national heritage groups in Pittsburgh. The group has performed through the tri-state area and Canada.

Ohno Bakufu

2011-2012 Arts in Education Partnership

Ohno Bakufu (1888-1976) was born in Tokyo. A painter and a print-maker, he was most active in the first half of the 20th century. He is best known for his “Fishes of Nippon” series (Dai Nihon gyorui gashu) which was released in 5 parts beginning in 1937 through 1942/44. Many of his designs were made from sketches of living fish. He also painted and printed landscapes.

Lilly Abreu and Trio

Focus Work of Art 
2010-2011 Arts in Education Partnership 

Lilly Abreu is one of Brazil’s greatest cultural assets, a versatile artist with numerous appearances as a recitalist and soloist with orchestras and chamber ensembles in France, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, United States and Brazil.  

She is on the roster of the Pittsburgh Opera and is also an accomplished popular music artist, performing regularly some of the greatest tunes of the Brazilian repertoire. She has just released a CD of Brazilian Popular Songs entitled BRASILEIRA, and with the Grammy nominated string quartet Cuarteto Latinoamericano, she recorded the CD BOSSA.  

Lilly currently teaches Voice at Carnegie Mellon University and Portuguese at the University of Pittsburgh. She received her Bachelor’s of Music from Federal University of Goiás (Brazil) and a Master’s in Voice Performance from Carnegie Mellon University.
