K.R.U.N.K. (Kreating Realistic Urban New-school Knowledge) is a student-led, high-energy music and health initiative that takes the technical language of the health industry and translates it to youth-friendly hip-hop language with a jazz beat. Designed to entertain and impact the thinking and behavior of teens and pre-teens as it relates to mental and physical health, this exciting performance features high school students performing their alloriginal hip-hop songs, jazz compositions and interactive dances. Students will examine how society and their environment affects the choices they make daily and analyze how these decisions relate to their mental and physical health. The goal is to empower students to create their own K.R.U.N.K. movements.

    A Whirlwind of Collaboration

Two densely-scheduled days this November marked the fruition of a collaborative project two years in the making, designed by Gateway to the Arts and the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. The goal was to assist the graduate chamber music ensembles at CMU in developing dynamic outreach programs for public school students grades K-12. Funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, project coordinators Lisa Hoitsma of Gateway and Dr. Natalie Ozeas of CMU enlisted the expertise of the Grammy-nominated African-American woodwind quintet, Imani Winds, known world-wide for their high-quality outreach programming that focuses on excellent musicianship, audience participation and repertoire.
