E-mail Print

Artist: Spilling Ink Project

VIJAY_090131_3898The Spilling Ink Project weaves memorable tales from Indian folklore and mythology that unfold through the rich, traditional Bharatanatyam South Indian classical dance form. An intricate hand gesture language combined with dramatic facial expressions takes audiences on a colorful journey to India. Melodic music including rhythmic percussion, colorful costuming, along with storytelling in English embellishes the program. Katha: Tales from India is an engaging and interactive way for participants of all ages to learn about India and its culture. Students will examine traditional stories from Indian folklore and mythology using the universal concept of storytelling through music and dance. Vijay Palaparty and Nalini Prakash, who lead the duet program, are renowned artists whose performances and outreach programs tour widely.

    A Whirlwind of Collaboration

Two densely-scheduled days this November marked the fruition of a collaborative project two years in the making, designed by Gateway to the Arts and the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. The goal was to assist the graduate chamber music ensembles at CMU in developing dynamic outreach programs for public school students grades K-12. Funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, project coordinators Lisa Hoitsma of Gateway and Dr. Natalie Ozeas of CMU enlisted the expertise of the Grammy-nominated African-American woodwind quintet, Imani Winds, known world-wide for their high-quality outreach programming that focuses on excellent musicianship, audience participation and repertoire.
