Urban Fiddlers Workshop

Mark_TamsulaIntroduce your string students to "old time" fiddling, a style that has accompanied community dances and been a traditional pastime of rural Americans for generations. In the Urban Fiddlers Workshop, following the tradition of learning this music by ear, students gain confidence in their own ability to learn quickly and remember tunes without sheet music. Instructional CDs and printed lyrics provided. Mark Tamsula has been teaching and performing traditional "old time" music on fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar for the past 20 years. A teacher at the Calliope Music School, Mark also performs as a part of the Gateway to the Arts performance program "Rhythmic Cultures."

Requirements:

Students must have a fiddle/violin and at least one year of playing experience - they should be comfortable handling a bow and fingering notes in first position. Sessions should take place in a classroom or music room.

    A Whirlwind of Collaboration

    Two densely-scheduled days this November marked the fruition of a collaborative project two years in the making, designed by Gateway to the Arts and the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. The goal was to assist the graduate chamber music ensembles at CMU in developing dynamic outreach programs for public school students grades K-12. Funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, project coordinators Lisa Hoitsma of Gateway and Dr. Natalie Ozeas of CMU enlisted the expertise of the Grammy-nominated African-American woodwind quintet, Imani Winds, known world-wide for their high-quality outreach programming that focuses on excellent musicianship, audience participation and repertoire.
