Out-of-School & Community

Out of school time and community programs are a fastgrowing segment of Gateway to the Arts’ programming.

From afterschool collaborations with the Westinghouse Lighthouse Project and 21st Century Community Learning Centers to academic summer programs with Pace School and Pittsburgh Public Schools’ Summer Dreamers Academy, Gateway has a reputation for reliable, quality programs and teaching artists and excellent project coordination.

In our out of school programs, we are focused on strengthening arts skills, identity and sense of community in participating children and youth. Gateway is currently facilitating a two-year project to strengthen the skills of regional teaching artists working in community-based organizations to empower them to identify, deliver and document arts-learning outcomes for these sites.

PaceSchoolMasksTake advantage of this exceptional arts learning opportunity. Some sites request artists to do in-depth art-making with youth, while others are looking for family-friendly workshops and performances. Our artists provide quality arts enrichment programs—engaging art-making opportunities that explore different cultures through visual art, music and dance. These experiences help foster creativity, self-esteem, teamwork, and life skills. Artist residencies can also be designed to reinforce reading fluency and visualization skills as well as tie to other learning and behavioral goals.

    A Whirlwind of Collaboration

Two densely-scheduled days this November marked the fruition of a collaborative project two years in the making, designed by Gateway to the Arts and the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. The goal was to assist the graduate chamber music ensembles at CMU in developing dynamic outreach programs for public school students grades K-12. Funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, project coordinators Lisa Hoitsma of Gateway and Dr. Natalie Ozeas of CMU enlisted the expertise of the Grammy-nominated African-American woodwind quintet, Imani Winds, known world-wide for their high-quality outreach programming that focuses on excellent musicianship, audience participation and repertoire.
